Many factors go into a successful pool or billiards game. The correct gripping of a cue, proper stance, cue ball control, proper English, and of course aim.
While you may think all of these ducks are in a row, it might all be for naught if the proper mental stance is not in play. Pool tables respond to your actions, so if your body and mind don't work together in achieving the same goal, then the result is chaos. This truth could be applied to many aspects of human life, but we're talking about billiards today.
Whether competing in a tournament or playing a recreational game at the pool tables in your local hall with a friend or strange bar fly, the object is of course to win. Without your mental compass calibrated for the win, you may as well call it a night.
Mental attitude is the backbone of any good pool player. Billiards has always been a game of thinking. To play your best, you must concentrate on the game and on the game alone. And you must concentrate intensely.
You have to discipline your minds so that your thoughts are directed only toward the general play of the contest in which you are engaged, and upon the particular shot you are seeking to make. You cannot ever 'double think' your shot.
Unless you develop a habit of concentration you will never be able to play up to your full potential. I really cannot stress this point too much. To me, concentration is the most important factor toward making a top notch billiard player. Strive to make it a natural habit.
It is said there are three qualities that are essential in becoming a competent pool player: good coordination, good eyesight, and the right mental attitude.
When you approach your next game, relax and rest your mind. Focus only on the game at hand and block the rest out; the crowd, your opponent's reputation, the argument you had at home or work, and concentrate totally on the game.
