Why Do You Play Pool?

Why do you play pool? If you asked people that question, you’d probably come up with a lot of different answers. Some play for the fun of it, to hang out with good friends on a Friday night at the local pool hall and simply have a good time. Others may enjoy hustling a game of pool now and then by pretending to be a novice at the game, missing the break entirely, hitting a few wrong balls and then running the rack to the surprise and unhappiness of your chosen victim. Others may play for practice, hoping to bring their game up to the level of a Karen Corr or a Mike Massey. Then there are those who want to learn all the trick shots, as well as the skill and the artistic shots in order to awe all of their friends or impress the ladies. If you’re good enough to do a Color of Money Shot or a Johnny Archer Split, then you probably already know a lot about the game.

Whatever your goal in picking up a pool cue, rubbing some chalk on it and smacking a few rocks around, it’s a good idea to start with the basics of the game and then move on from there. You’ll never go wrong by learning the rules of the game and then studying those who have greater skill than your own. You’ll notice that the pros all have their own pool cues, whether it be a brand new Predator or a Sneaky Pete, it’s a good idea to have your own pool cue to practice with in order to have a consistent game and the ability to make the pool cue feel like an extension of your arm. If it’s good enough for the pros, why shouldn’t it be good enough for you?

If you’re serious about the game, then it’s an excellent investment on your part. Look around and try a couple of pool cues before you decide on just the one you want to make your very own. Once you find it, use it gently at first, and make sure to bed the tip correctly so it gives you the best possible straight shots possible.

You might not ever be the next Black Widow on the tournament circuit but with some practice and perseverance, you could just very well end up being the star of the pool hall in your town.
